Moving to Western Massachusetts: What No One Tells You

People love to talk about Western Massachusetts in broad strokes. “Quiet,” “affordable,” “good place to raise a family.” All of that is true. But what no one really tells you is how it feels to live here once the boxes are unpacked and real-life kicks in. Western Mass isn’t just a place you move to; it’s a place you settle into!

One of the first things people notice is the pace. Life slows down here in the best possible way. Traffic isn’t a daily stressor, errands don’t require strategy, and weekends don’t feel rushed. Towns like Westfield, Agawam, and Southwick give you space to breathe while still keeping you close to everything you need. You can actually enjoy your mornings, your evenings, and your time outside of work, which feels rare these days.

Another thing people don’t always expect is how strong the sense of community is. Western Mass towns still show up for each other. You’ll find local events that feel genuinely local, small businesses that know their customers by name, and neighborhoods where people still wave. Whether it’s grabbing coffee, walking through a park, or sitting at a high school game, there’s a feeling of connection that sneaks up on you and once it does, it’s hard to imagine living without it.

Nature is woven into everyday life here in a way that feels effortless. Parks, trails, water, and green space aren’t “destinations” they’re just part of your routine. Places like Stanley Park aren’t just weekend spots; they’re where childhood memories are made, where people unwind after work, and where you start to feel rooted. The seasons are real here too, and yes, winter exists but so do fall weekends that feel magical and summers that invite you outside!

What also surprises people is how different each town feels. Western Massachusetts isn’t one experience, it’s many. Some areas feel more walkable and tight-knit, others more spread out and private. That’s why choosing the right town matters just as much as choosing the right house. This isn’t about finding the “best” place it’s about finding the place that fits your life, your routines, and your season.

And maybe the biggest thing no one tells you? People who move here tend to stay. Western Mass has a way of quietly becoming home. Not flashy. Not loud. Just steady, grounded, and deeply livable! That is why I call this place home.

If you’re thinking about moving to Western Massachusetts, the most important thing to know is this: it’s not just about affordability or location it’s about lifestyle. And once you find your rhythm here, it’s hard to imagine being anywhere else!

Angie Schermerhorn

I’m Angie Schermerhorn, a Western Massachusetts Realtor with the Stephanie Salerno Team at Coldwell Banker Realty, and I help first-time homebuyers and first-time sellers feel confident every step of the way.

Most of my clients are working moms, independent women, and LGBTQ+ buyers who are doing this for the first time, buying their first home, selling their first home, or stepping into their next chapter. My job is to make the process feel clear, not scary.

I break everything down in real language, advocate hard for my clients, and don’t believe in pressure, fluff, or fear-based tactics. You’ll always know what’s happening, what your options are, and what makes the most sense for you.

Outside of real estate, I’m all about community, good coffee, and a great glass of wine. I’ve lived in Western Massachusetts my whole life, and I truly love the towns I serve and the people who make them feel like home.

Buying or selling a home is a huge move financially and emotionally and I take that responsibility seriously. I’m here to guide you, protect you, and celebrate you when you get the keys (or the check!).

What truly sets me apart is how personal I make this experience. I don’t just open doors, I build real relationships. I stay accessible, I care deeply about what this move means for your life (not just your finances), and I support you long after the paperwork is signed. My clients know they can text me the “silly” questions, the big fears, and the excited wins and I’ll always show up. I always say, “Get ready to have a friend for life.”

If you’re thinking about buying or selling your first home in Western Massachusetts and want a Realtor who’s honest, down-to-earth, and truly in your corner, I’d love to help!
